Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Google’s Chrome may be fighting over the number one spot when it comes to the desktop browser market, but within the world of mobile browsers Apple’s Safari dominates thanks to the iPhone and iPad’s popularity. Mozilla is looking to change this, with the announcement of its latest Firefox mobile browser for Android.

According to the company, Firefox for Android version 14 is much faster than the standard Android browser, Firefox 13, as well as its other mobile browser rivals. This assertion is based upon results it obtained within benchmark test such as Sunspider and the in-house developed Eideticker. The firm claims that this snappiness can be found within all facets of the browser, ranging from startup- and page load times through to panning and zooming as well as web app performance.

Besides being faster, the newest edition of Firefox for Android also offers an enhanced user interface that sports a personalised start page, and new Awesome Screen powered by Firefox Sync. The latter brings a user’s browsing history, bookmarks, passwords and form data from their desktop browser to their Android-running smartphone.

In addition, features such as tabbed browsing, Firefox Add-ons and support for Flash-based movies, games and web apps are also included within Firefox for Android. Firefox 14 is available in the Google Play Store for mobile devices powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo) and up, with this free app weighing in at a chubby 17 MB.

In related news, Mozilla also made the latest version of its desktop internet browser available for download at the beginning of this month. Firefox 13 makes a number of esthetic changes, introducing a redesigned home page that incorporates icons at the bottom of the page, providing users with easy access to their bookmarks, browsing history, browser settings, add-ons, downloads as well as sync preferences.
