After recently unveiling its new Tegra 4 mobile processor, GPU maker Nvidia has introduced its first fully integrated LTE (4G) mobile processor, the Nvidia Tegra 4i, which the company says is significantly faster and also half the size of its nearest competitor.

Previously codenamed ‘Project Grey’, the Tegra 4i processor boasts 60 custom Nvidia GPU cores that should result in some fantastic mobile graphics. Processing duty is handled via a 2.3 GHz quad-core CPU based on ARM’s newest and most efficient CPU design (R4 Cortex-A9 CPU), along with a fifth battery saver core.

Console-esque graphics, LTE, and advanced photographic features

Nvidia asserts that the Tegra 4i will deliver ‘console-quality gaming experiences’ and boasts support for full HD (1080p) displays. Furthermore, the chipset sports an optimised version of the Nvidia i500 software-defined radio modem to provide LTE capabilities.

The CPU’s camera capabilities include the Nvidia Chimera Computational Photography Architecture, allowing it to deliver advanced features the likes of always-on high dynamic range (HDR) capabilities, tap to track functionality and a novel panoramic photos with HDR feature.

“Nvidia is delivering for the first time a single, integrated processor that powers all the major functions of a smartphone,” said Phil Carmack, senior VP of the Mobile business at Nvidia. “Tegra 4i phones will provide amazing computing power, world-class phone capabilities, and exceptionally long battery life.”

Tom Cronk, executive VP and general manager of the processor division at ARM added: “Tegra 4i is the very latest SoC solution based on the ARM Cortex-A9 processor and demonstrates the ability of ARM and our partners to continue to push the performance of technology and create exciting user experiences.”

“ARM and Nvidia worked closely to further optimise the Cortex-A9 processor to drive performance and efficiency in areas such as streaming and responsiveness. This is an example of the collaboration and innovation that enables ARM technology-based solutions to be market drivers through multiple generations of SoC solutions."

The Tegra 4i mobile CPU will be showcased at the 2013 Mobile World Congress that kicks off next week in Barcelona, Spain.

In related news, Nvidia also recently announced that it was entering the portable gaming space with Project Shield, which has been designed to cater to open platforms and will be able to accommodate both PC and Android titles on its 5" (1280 x 720; 294 dpi) HD multitouch display.
