Following the availability of the Exynos 4 Quad application processor (AP) in devices such as its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3, Samsung has revealed the specifications behind its latest mobile processor - the Exynos 5 Dual. The Korean tech giant stated that this processor has been specifically designed to power high-end tablets and is the world’s first low-power dual-core Cortex-A15 based AP.

As with the quad-core Exynos 4 Quad AP, the dual-core Exynos 5 Dual is based upon an ARM Cortex processor design, in this case two ARM Cortex-A15 CPU cores with a clock speed of 1.7 GHz, instead of the A9 quad-core design used in the Exynos 4 Quad.

Graphics is handled via a Mali T-604 graphics processing unit, with the firm boldly asserting that its Exynos 5 Dual is the world’s best mobile 3D graphic processor, since its supports WQXGA (2560 x 1600) resolution 3D graphics at 60 fps. All this whilst tablet users will be able to record and view movies in full HD (1080p) and snap some high-res images via their mobile device’s camera, since the AP features an embedded image signal processor that supports up to 8 MP camera sensors.

In addition, the AP makes use of Samsung’s High-k Metal Gate (HKMG) low-power process technology also employed within its Exynos stablemates. The company stated that due to the 32 nm HKMG process, power consumption has been significantly decreased by around 30% compared to CPUs utilising the 45 nm HKMG process. No news yet surrounding which Samsung tablet this AP will be making its debut in.  

In related news, Samsung also recently announced the impending launch of its Galaxy Note 10.1, a tablet intent on merging the best of Samsung’s 10.1" Galaxy Tab tablet and the smaller 5.3" Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet hybrid.
