Tech giant Google has lifted the lid on the newest iteration of its Android mobile operating system (OS) dubbed Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Android 4.3 is more of a small step rather than a giant leap for the OS, introducing a set of minor improvements and feature tweaks.

These include support for Bluetooth Smart (aka Bluetooth Low Energy), allowing Android-powered mobile devices to communicate with many kinds of low-power Bluetooth Smart devices the likes of fitness and medical sensors.

In addition, Android users will now be able to set up restricted profiles, which works similarly to Windows Phone 8’s Kid’s Corner feature. This allows tablet owners to create user profiles for their children for instance, which limits the level of access other users have to apps.

Since Android 4.3 now offers support for the OpenGL ES 3.0, mobile game developers can employ this standard and EGL extensions to enhance the graphics of their 3D games.

The company has made the firmware update available to the current crop of Nexus branded devices including the Google Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10, with the latest version of the mobile platform also set to power the forthcoming new Nexus 7 tablet.
