After unveiling its innovative Galaxy Beam I8530 projector smartphone just before the 2012 Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Samsung Electronics South Africa has announced the local availability of this device.

This smartphone measures 64.2 x 124 x 12.5 mm and weighs 145.3 g. It boasts a built-in beam projector that enables users to display multimedia content over a large screen format. Powering the Beam is a 1 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor and the phone operates on Google's Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) mobile operating system (OS).

Samsung equipped the device with a 4" (480 x 800) TFT display, 786 MB RAM, 8 GB internal memory, which can be expanded to up to 40 GB via the microSD memory card slot (supports cards up to 32 GB in size). Also onboard is 3G HSPA connectivity, a 5 MP rear-facing camera with flash, as well as a 1.3 megapixel front-facing snapper for capturing self-portraits and making video calls.

What sets this smartphone apart though, is its built-in beam projector. The Galaxy Beam’s overhead projector mode supports enlargement, and is able to project durable copy by projecting the images captured by the camera of the smartphone. This projector is also able to project images at up to 1 300 mm in size at 15 lumens, which helps to ensure that the presentation material is not blurred.

Samsung claims that this device’s  2 000 mAh battery will enable it to have up to three hours of continuous play time for full-length conference presentations, and live streaming of videos without the need to stop and recharge.

“Globally, there has been much hype around, and demand for the Galaxy Beam I8530 and this has certainly filtered into the local market, where we are witnessing increasing demand for this product. As we continue to listen to needs and wants of the local market, we look forward to the continued growth of our smartphone range locally and believe that this smartphone is another way in which we will continue to drive this growth,” said Craige Fleischer, director of Mobile Communications at Samsung.

The Samsung Galaxy Beam I8530 is now available through local Vodacom outlets at a recommended retail price of R5 499.

In related news, Samsung also recently announced its very first Windows Phone 8 powered smartphone, the ATIV S, and officially unveiled its Galaxy Note 2 smartphone.
